A little while ago I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph the legendary John Haeny.
John is a famous audio engineer and music producer, with stunning credits to his name such as: Jim Morrison and The Doors, John Coltraine, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Brown, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Jones and Duke Ellington, just to name a few.
Our session was very relaxed with John and I just chatting away in his home. Some of the stories he told me from his time in the music industry in New York, Los Angeles and the West Coast Pop-Music scene of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, were both funny and interesting. I found I could identify with John’s passion. Like all great artists, he seems to have a great love for his craft and enjoys the creative struggle as much as his successes. I enjoyed the trip to his home as he truly lives in paradise – Tasmania’s beautiful Huon Valley.
This photo is the image we have both agreed on as the best of a good bunch, one of my all time favourites. It was taken while sitting across from John at his kitchen table. I like this image because it is simple and intense. There is no vanity here – just an honest glance into the camera in an off moment. There was no posing, no trying to look cool or interesting – this is just a receipt of a moment in time. Taken with simple natural light flooding in from a dining room window.
I had a great time, took some great photos and met a great man.
