I am Tony Lomas, I am a photographer and always will be.

I formerly worked in television as a Director, Editor and Colour Grader.  I gave that up to do what I love – it might sound a bit naff, but it’s true.

I started by one day helping a friend out when she was asked to do some wedding photography here in Hobart.  I thought I’d just take some photos and that would be the end of it.  I have to admit, I had the time of my life.  I really liked going to weddings anyway, I always thought they had good energy – everyone is usually on their best behaviour, so I have always liked them.  But that day, seeing people smiling, giggling and looking their best was great fun to photograph.

So I made the decision to become a full time photographer knowing full well that I was going to end up doing lots of weddings – and that was just fine with me! Weddings are hard and it’s a long day, both physically and especially mentally.  Trying to keep track of what you need to capture, versus, what you can photograph really well, is a real challenge – it’s like doing a puzzle, but a really good puzzle.

Sometimes I work in conjunction with other Hobart photographers when photographing weddings.

Portraits are different, because you can photograph everyone from a newborn though to an older couple.  The fun here is meeting new people who unlike a bridal party, aren’t nervous.  You have to get to know your subject, to see what they want or how they see themselves.

Commercial work is very much like television production – just in strobed motion – one shot should tell the story. It’s nice having a little bit more time to plan and photograph to a brief. After a discussion with the client, you can usually tell exactly what they are after, so you know what to do.

I love all stages of photography, the idea, the set up (lighting and posing), the photographing and the processing – it’s all good fun… I like to think I make photos, rather than take photos…

As it’s said, “it’s not work if you enjoy what you do”!
